THE GIFT OF DANCE

There are two famous dancers in the Bible. One was David, the shepherd turned king. His passion was God. On one occasion David celebrated His love for God with a powerful and reckless abandon. He could not help but dance. He lost himself in dance in the presence of God's goodness.

But David's wife, Michal, was embarrassed by the king's display. Later she scolded him for his emotional dance in front of slave girls. But David was not even concerned about the presence of the slave girls. He was only concerned with dancing before God! It was in God's honor that David celebrated and danced. His dance was a gift to God. (2 Samuel 6)

The second person danced with great skill. Her moves impressed all who watched her dance. One occasion was the social event of the year, a birthday party for a king. The guest list included celebrities, big-shot politicians, and high-ranking soldiers. They were all amazed by the young woman's dance.

The king was so pleased by his guests' reaction, that he told the dancer he would give her anything she wanted up to half of his kingdom.

She consulted with her mother. The mother thought of a prophet, John the Baptist, who had preached against her marriage to the king. She directed her daughter to ask for John's head on a platter. (Mark 6)

Can you imagine? She could have had almost anything she desired. But she requested that a man of God die. King Herod, her stepfather, reluctantly carried out his promise. A great prophet was executed that day.

Two dancers. Both had great passion. One danced for God. The other dancer broke God's heart.

Who do you dance for? Dance with passion and enthusiasm. Move with skill and rhythm. But let your dance be a gift for the Lord. Let God be the audience you seek to please.

In Christ,
